Ship of Theseus
This is a class task which we had to do with the concept of Ship of Theseus
The Ship of Theseus is a famous philosophical paradox that poses the question of identity and change. It takes its name from the legendary Greek hero Theseus, who sailed on a ship that was preserved in Athens for centuries. The paradox asks: if every part of a ship is replaced over time, does it remain the same ship?
The thought experiment goes like this: as the ship ages, its planks and components begin to deteriorate and are gradually replaced with new ones. Eventually, every single part of the ship is exchanged. This raises the puzzling question of whether the ship with all the replaced parts is still considered the original Ship of Theseus. It challenges our understanding of identity, as we question whether it lies in the material composition or if there are other factors that define the essence of an object or being. The Ship of Theseus paradox has captivated philosophers for centuries, inviting contemplation on the nature of identity, continuity, and the impact of change.
